Since February of 2022, the United States has served as arguably the biggest supporter of Ukraine’s defense against Russia. From the get-go, the Biden administration supplied Ukraine with hundreds of billions of dollars, whether in financial aid or weaponry. The United States has also taken in hundreds of thousands of refugees since the invasion began.
As the war dragged on, and a virtual stalemate began to form, many Americans—especially on the right— began to question how big an ally the U.S. should be. Influential conservatives shifted away from supporting Ukraine, and many even began to sympathize with anti-Western Russian sentiment. Most notable was conservative talk show host Tucker Carlson, who went to Russia to interview and “humanize” Vladimir Putin. However, while Carlson may have been perhaps the most famous example of conservative anti-Ukraine sentiment, his comments echoed what many on the right were feeling.
Trump’s victory in 2024 threatened many aspects of American life, ranging from women’s rights, immigration, disregard for judicial systems and more. However, his victory also threatened global structures. Given the right’s changing stance on Ukraine, nobody knew how Trump would treat the conflict. Trump's vagueness on the topic didn’t help either. When asked about what he would do to resolve the conflict, he would repeatedly say “the war wouldn’t have started if I were president” or that he would get the two countries in a room and solve it in a day. It’s safe to say that did not happen. We are now 10 months into his second term, and the war is still raging on.
Trump’s public stance on Ukraine has been notoriously inconsistent. At times he has signaled support, offering military aid or discussing the importance of Ukrainian sovereignty, while at other moments he has questioned whether Ukraine can win, suggested freezing territorial lines, or hinted at appeasing Russia. Not to mention the infamous oval office meeting where President Zelenskyy and Vice President Vance exchanged some heated words. President Trump’s statements often conflicted with actions. This unpredictability has created an unusual environment in which policy and public messaging do not always align, and where the influence of quieter voices behind the scenes could be critical.
Through shifting tones and narratives from government officials, there has been one persistent supporter of Ukraine in the White House: Melania Trump. As a slovenian born immigrant, she has repeatedly stood firm with her Slavic brothers and sisters in Ukraine.
In August 2025, a notable exchange of letters occurred between U.S. First Lady Melania Trump and Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska, highlighting the role of first ladies in diplomacy and humanitarian advocacy amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
On August 15, 2025, Melania Trump sent a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to consider the impact of the war on children. Without explicitly naming Ukraine, she appealed to Putin's sense of responsibility, emphasizing the importance of protecting children's innocence and advocating for peace. This letter was delivered by President Donald Trump during his summit with Putin in Alaska. In her message, Melania wrote, "Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart... They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger." AP News
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented a letter from his wife, Olena Zelenska, to Melania Trump during a meeting at the White House on August 18, 2025. Zelenskyy humorously remarked, "It's not to you, it's to your wife," as he handed over the letter to President Trump. The letter expressed gratitude for Melania's advocacy on behalf of Ukrainian children affected by the war.
Finally, Melania Trump revealed that after an "open channel of communication" with Putin, some Ukrainian children displaced and kidnapped in the war had been reunited with their families. Throughout the chaos and inconsistencies of her husband’s presidency, Melania Trump’s firm support for Ukraine has served as reassurance for the nation that the United States can still continue to be an ally in Ukraine’s fight against Russia.
