Seniors of CPS: Charlie G.

Interview conducted by Wells R.

Wells: Hey Charlie! First we’re gonna start with some rapid-fire questions to get the interview started. Which do you like better, Gym Deck or Student Commons?

Charlie: Student Commons.

Wells: Favorite Trader Joe’s Snack?

Charlie: I like those Takis.

Wells: Those are classic! Freshman Physics or Asian Worlds?

Charlie: Freshman Physics all the way.

Wells: What’s your favorite department at CPS?

Charlie: That’s a hard one. I think science is probably my favorite.

Wells: Now for some more open-ended questions: what has been your favorite CPS class, and why?

Charlie: The classes I took freshman and sophomore year are a bit fuzzy, so I can’t remember them as well, but recently, Anatomy and Physiology has been my favorite. The dissections were really cool, but what made it stand out is that Cameron is such an enthusiastic and fun teacher to have. I didn’t really think I was gonna enjoy it, but in the end it was a blast, and I learned a lot of really interesting stuff.

Wells: What’s something that not a lot of people at CPS know about you?

Charlie: I don’t know if this is something I should really flex because it’s a little bit embarrassing, but I used to be on a semi-professional Overwatch team, where I was rated in the top 50 players in North America and top 500 in the world.

Wells: Wow, that's super impressive! Where do you see yourself in five years?

Charlie: I’m thinking of taking a gap year before college, so hopefully I’ll have more opportunities to perform guitar and explore music in general. I have a good idea of what I want my career to be, so hopefully I’ll have that figured out by then, too.

Wells: What’s one of your favorite CPS memories?

Charlie: Honestly, I’d have to say my favorite memory is playing in the pit orchestra of my freshman year musical, Mamma Mia. Before, I had really only talked to people in my grade, but through the musical, I was really able to bond with seniors and juniors.

Wells: The musical is really fun to play in! If you could give advice to your freshman year self, what would it be?

Charlie: One thing would definitely be to study more for finals, because I feel like I lose motivation to study right near the end of the semester. But more importantly, just be yourself. I know it’s cliché, but it really is important.

Wells: If you could say thank you to one room at CPS, what would it be?

Charlie: I would definitely say the practice room inside the music building, because I’ve spent many, many hours there.

Wells: I know you’ve talked about it a little, but some people may or may not know that you are an extremely talented classical guitarist, so can you tell us a little about that and what it has taught you?

Charlie: Yeah, my dad is a classical guitar teacher, so he’s been teaching me since I was physically able to play a guitar. In the past, I’ve gone through phases where I didn’t really feel like playing, but it’s since become something I truly love and a really big part of who I am. Whether it’s bossa nova, classic rock, or classical music, I really enjoy exploring all genres of guitar music.

Wells: Thank you so much Charlie; that's all for today!
