Radar Definitively Rates Halloween Candy

This Wednesday during Common Classroom, Radar got together to test the best and worst Halloween candies…How much sugar did we eat? A lot. Was it good? Oh, you bet.

Here were our thoughts –

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Average rating: 3.8/5

“A distinct part of my childhood that always calms me – the chocolate and peanut butter is a classic combo. The sweet of the chocolate and salt of the peanut butter balance each other out perfectly. Even the sight of the package is enough to calm me and make me nostalgic.” (5) – Pauline

“They’re fine, I mean they’re no Reese’s Pieces… turns out one is meh and the other is great.” (3) – Ana

Classic Tootsie Roll

Average Rating: 3.1/5

“I like tootsie rolls! I like the shape of these because it makes them easy to eat. A classic candy. I would advise small children to be careful about their teeth while chewing the candies though…short and thick.” (4) – Maya

“I…remembered these tasting better than they do. Why are they so hard? Am I missing teeth?” (1.5) – Amy

Tootsie Fruit Chew

Average Rating: 2.9/5

“Lemon flavoring is good, but the texture seems very dried out. It also leaves a banana-ish after taste that does not compliment the original flavor.” (2.5) – Darius

“It’s like I’m chewing old, hard candy. Did not finish.” (2) – Amy

Classic M&M’s

Average Rating: 4/5

“Can’t go wrong with the OG M&M’s – a perfect snack for watching a horror movie…or a romcom if you’re like me” (5) – Ana

“Kind of blandly mildly buttery for some reason, pieces of outer edge break off easily” (3) – Isa

Caramel M&M’s

Average Rating: 3.6/5

“Very, very good. Fully caramel, blue packaging makes me calm.” (4.75) – Isa

“A satisfying crunch before a nice squish of the caramel. As you chew the caramel, the chocolate melts away. However, the caramel really does not taste right. Also, sometimes when you bite it, the chocolate cracks in half, leaving the two flavors separate.” (3) – Pauline

Peanut M&M’s

Average Rating: 4/5

“Nice, crunchy, not too sweet, strangely addicting – I don’t usually like peanut M&M’s” (4) – Isa

Peanut Butter M&M’s

Average Rating: 4.2

“A lovely alteration upon the classic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. As a person who adores peanut butter, this is an incredible snack after a long day. A familiar chocolate taste before the incredible peanut butter of which it is named. It is also fun to bite them in half and eat the chocolate then the peanut butter.” (5) – Pauline

“Good peanut butter flavor, but they’re no Reese’s Pieces.” (4) – Ana

Hershey’s Cookies’n’Cream

Average Rating: 2.9/5

“Good crunch but taste is bad. White chocolate is never good. It’s way too sweet.” (2) – Sonia

“I did not like this, yet somehow I would eat more? It’s very confusing. This is like milk in bar form. I have regrets.” (1.5) – Amy

Twizzlers

Average Rating: 2/5

“The first thing I loved about Twizzlers was the sweet smell. It was a very chewy candy and the taste lingered in my mouth.” (4) – Danna

“Oof these are not Red Vines” (0) – Ana

Snickers

Average Rating: 4/5

“The Snickers are all around pretty good. The caramel and the peanut flavors go well together and compliment the chocolate. I personally don’t enjoy some aspect that I can’t put my finger on.” (4) – Avi

“Maybe a little too sweet. All the flavors work very well together. The crunch is delightful.” (4) – Sonia

Heath Bar

Average Rating: 3.1/5

“I’m generally not a huge fan of milk chocolate, but these are pretty good. This ‘English toffee’ makes you feel sophisticated while eating it lol. I like the crunch.” (4) – Maya

“This was surprisingly crunchy. I was not anticipating the inner caramel, so it was a tad too sweet but overall a fun time.” (3.5) – Danna

“Tastes like microwave popcorn. Crunch is good.” (1) – Sonia

Dots

Average Rating: 3.6

“I love the different colors in each Dots box and their smooth, chewy texture. It’s like a fun flavorful rainbow yumm” (5) – Danna

“Nice to chew and enjoyable flavor, but after the flavor was worn off, it sticks to your teeth and is a pain to get off.” (3.5) – Darius

Butterfinger

Average Rating: 1

“Just did not finish. If a candy could be greasy, it would be this one.” (1) – Danna

Whoppers

Average Rating: 3.4

“Whoppers are quality Halloween candy – whoever thought of them is a genius. It may also just be the chocolate that I like…” (4.5) – Thea

“Flavor combination works well, but the center’s texture doesn’t work well with the chocolate – there’s too much of a difference. It also leaves a strange aftertaste.” (2.9) – Darius

“I thought I didn’t like these, and I still don’t like them. They’re definitely too sweet and the texture is weird – Are there people who actually like these?” (2) – Maya

Hot Tamales

Average Rating: 4.2/5

“Satisfying to eat and cinnamon flavor is good, but once it wears off the candy starts to taste like wax.” (3.3) – Darius

“Listen, I objectively know that these are gross, but I want to eat ALLLLLLL of them!” (5 stars) – Amy

Sour Patch Watermelon

Average Rating: 3.8/5

“Amazing taste – sour adds a nice punch. Very good amount of chew.” (4.5) – Sonia

“These are not very sour, and they are quite sticky, but you can taste the watermelon flavor.” (3) – Celia

Sour Patch Kids

Average Rating: 4.6/5

“Contrast between sour and sweet really adds something. Texture is good whether chewed or dissolved.” (4.2) – Darius

“Can’t go wrong with Sour Patch – just watch out for chemical burns.” (5) – Ana

“Not the perfect candy because you can’t eat a ton of them. Also, I don’t eat the yellows.” (4) – Amy

“A great candy; they have a perfect balance of sour and sweet. I like the flavors, too. A little bit weird to be eating children.” (5) – Maya

“The Sour Patch Kids have a good variety of flavors. The sourness adds to the experience as well. Not to mention, the human shape is fun. All around a good candy.” (5) – Avi

Rolos

Average Rating: 3.7/5

“Chewy Caramel – this little candy appeared simple but it was surprisingly tasty and just the light amount of chewy” (4.5) – Danna

“Tastes how you expect, and they taste pretty good. I’m not sure if I’d want to eat more than a couple, though” (3.75) – Maya

“This candy unfortunately was quite disappointing. You would assume the Rolo would be an exciting candy with a salty, gooey caramel inside. However, the Rolos caramel was subpar, not salty at all. Instead, the caramel was all weak. The chocolate was weak as well, so overall don’t waste your time on this candy.” (2) – Daisy

Kit Kats

Average Rating: 4.5/5

“All in all, a well-rounded candy. The chocolate is sweet and milky and the wafer provides a good crunch. I had to take a point away because it’s not very imaginative.” (4) – Avi

“I love Kit Kats. I know they aren’t too interesting, but THEY ARE SO GOOD! The chocolate with the crunchy wafers, yes please!” (5) – Thea

Milk Duds

Average Rating: 2.5/5

“Really hard to chew. Thin chocolate around outside, not thick enough. A little too large.” (3) – Isa

“They taste fine, but they’re very hard to eat. When you bite into them, they crunch for a little bit and then get chewy and stuck in your teeth.” (2) – Sonia

“Once a milk dud pulled out my tooth – danger!” (2.5)  – Amy

Haribo Ghosty Gummies

Average Rating: 2.2/5

“How are they different colors, but all taste the same?” (3) – Amy

“The gummies have hardly any flavor variation and they are very difficult to chew. Still, I gave them one point because they are candy and candy’s good.” (1) – Avi

“Too hard. I have to exert effort to bite into it. The taste is fine though” (2.5) – Sonia

Milky Way

Average Rating: 4.5/5

“Sweet, creamy goodness! Would recommend. The candy is neither overwhelming nor underwhelming” (5) – Daisy

“Great flavor, too small to fully appreciate. Caramel and nougat blend too quickly” (4.5) – Isa

“This bar brings back memories of fighting over nougat. The chewy caramel and nougat balance the chocolate very well. If you eat too many (like 3) you may barf from the sweetness though” (4) – Pauline

In conclusion, we have scientifically proven that Sour Patch Kids are the best candy. And although we only had one Butterfinger, it’s the worst.
