Interview conducted by Emnet T.

Emnet: Okay, we're gonna start off with rapid fire questions. What's your favorite Trader Joe's snack?
Inez: The potato chips that come in a can, like Pringles.
Emnet: I've never had those.
Inez: They're really good. They taste like Pringles except I can gaslight myself into thinking they're healthier and they're really, really good, and it’s a huge can. You should try them.
Emnet: I'm actually not a big Pringles fan, but I'm glad that you like them.
Inez: I like them because they're not as oily and thick as the others, so you can eat pretty large stacks of them. They're really salty and crispy and definitely don't look like or feel like a potato, but I enjoy them, whatever they are.
Emnet: I'm glad that you enjoy them. Okay, gym deck or student commons?
Inez: Like, neither.
Emnet: What wins instead? Like, what takes their place?
Inez: I'd say a Hill classroom with the windows open.
Emnet: Really?
Inez: Yeah. I feel like people always leave food on the gym deck [and] in the student commons, and it's just a bit nasty. I like to hang out where I keep my trash clean, and other people keep their trash clean.
Emnet: That's interesting! I sometimes feel like the Hill classrooms have such, like, negative juju.
Inez: Really? I don't know. I'm a big juju believer, and sometimes I will walk into a Hill classroom, and I'll feel the bad juju, but then you just gotta walk out and find another one.
Emnet: That's great. Okay, next one, is a hot dog a sandwich?
Inez: Okay, so, yes, if it's homemade, no if you're buying it off the street.
Emnet: Really? That's a really unique answer. What's the logic behind that?
Inez: It's a street food if you're buying it off the street. It's like its own cuisine, but if you're making it at home, then you're basically just making another version of a sandwich.
Emnet: I really like that answer. Okay, what is one thing you regret spending money on?
Inez: Um, I regret spending money on those casting websites that actually don't work that well. But at the same time, it's also really hard to find casting calls, but yeah, I regret spending money on that.
Emnet: Okay. What Disney character would you be?
Inez: I think I would be Anna. Like, I love Frozen, like, to this day—it's in my top three favorite movies. And she's very clumsy, and she definitely says the wrong thing at the wrong time, but she ends up saving the day, and, like, I hope that's me. Like I hope that will be me; that's what I aspire to do.
Emnet: I think that's such a great answer. Okay, what's your go-to karaoke song?
Inez: I love a good Amy Winehouse song for karaoke.
Emnet: I think that's a good one. Can you freestyle rap?
Inez: I did on Senior Retreat.
Emnet: Do you want to perform one for us really quick right now?
Inez: Do I want to perform a freestyle rap? About what?
Emnet: About anything you want to.
Inez: Haha, I don't know, like, you can't just ambush me with a freestyle rap, that's crazy work. Wait okay:
I’m sitting in the shade, I wish I was away.
I wish I was getting paid, but alas I'm here to stay.
Emnet: That was incredible!
Inez: That was really bad. No, trust, my freestyle rap at Senior Retreat was, like, fire.
Emnet: I'll trust. Okay, last one is: what superpower would you have?
Inez: I want to be able to speak every single language, but, like, when I say every single language, I mean, like, animal language and, like, mermaid language and, like, fairy language. But, like, every single language.
Emnet: Wait, I love that.
Inez: Yeah! I'll be able to speak all the languages. Because it's like reading minds, but you don't hear stuff that people don't want you to hear.
Emnet: That’s such a good answer! These are longer response questions, by the way. What is something that not a lot of people know about you?
Inez: I don't know. I feel like I'm a pretty open book. But a fun fact I tell people, I was really into playing cards growing up, and I got, like, really good at poker in elementary school. So I’m pretty good at poker. And I guess a lot of people know I do theater, but I've been doing theater for, like, over a decade, which is kind of crazy when I think about it.
Emnet: Wait, so, like, you were five?
Inez: I think I was six or seven. But, like, that's when I officially started doing community theater. Before that, I would put on shows with my friends, and yeah.
Emnet: Wait, that's actually so cool. That's, like, literally a lifelong passion. If you could say thank you to one place on campus, what would it be?
Inez: Thank you for one place on campus? Definitely the math office. I spent so many hours there last year as a transfer student trying to catch up. I was definitely very behind, but Norm and I struggled through a lot of problems there together. It's always really bright and warm, and it's open after school, and all the teachers in there are so lovely. Like Alexa will always answer my questions. I definitely feel, like, “thank you” to the math office for getting me through junior year.
Emnet: That’s cool. Next is: what is one of your favorite CPS memories?
Inez: Snow trip was really fun. I enjoyed it. Choreo this year was also really fun. I enjoyed tech for that and, like, putting on those shows. Yeah, my favorite CPS memories are definitely non-classroom CPS memories.
Emnet: That's very legitimate.
Inez: I'm trying to think. I have to say I had a very lovely time in Dr. Infante's, like, witches seminar. It was the first English class I took here. But I think my answer is going to be Snow Trip this year.
Emnet: I think Snow Trip is a good answer. Do you have a specific memory from Snow Trip? Or was it just like the whole trip?
Inez: I think it was the vibes. I really love the vibes. And I really enjoyed choreo this year and getting to choreograph something for the first time.
Emnet: I really enjoyed watching choreo this year! If you could give advice to your freshman self, what would it be?
Inez: I think my advice would be, don’t be too ambitious. Like, be ambitious and work hard for the sake of working hard, but also, go a lot easier on yourself. You don't have to feel like you're running out of time to do everything because you're literally just fourteen. Also, I would tell myself good job trying things, and keep trying things out. I know there are lots of things in high school you want to do and, like, you'll be able to do them. But also, I would tell myself you don't have to feel like you're running out of time constantly. Like, remember to leave time for your friends and family and for, like, having fun for the sake of having fun. You don't have to be so worried about the future.
Emnet: That's good advice. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Inez: I think I probably see myself in LA or New York because I want to try and do film and theater outside of college. I feel, like, you can be, like, a failing actor for, like, five years max. And then it starts getting a little sad. So I'm gonna give myself, like, five years out of college to try and be as successful as I can. I'd like to pretend I'd have my own apartment, like they do in all the sitcoms. But realistically, I'll probably be living with some of my titas and like my aunties, taking care of like cousins or their kids, and working. Hopefully, I've made some student films in college, maybe they'll have won some student film awards. And yeah, I'd like to just have no regrets. And I see myself having made a lot out of my four years of college and having done a lot of art and theater, and hopefully having majored in something that's useful. So that's where I see myself in five years. I think definitely in a city.
Emnet: That's actually, like, a really good answer. It was really specific. Okay, those are all our questions, but do you have a photo of you from freshman year and maybe a little context for it?
Inez: Yeah, here is one. The context for that photo (inserted below) was that it was a really awful day at Berkeley High. And this girl just passed away, and my friends were really sad. And we all left class to support them. Most of my friends were seniors and juniors my freshman year because these seniors were organizing this school theater show, and so I auditioned for it. And I was the only freshman who did it. We all left school and went and sat above this creek on Cal campus. It was my first time I skipped class and they're, like, they told me about life. And it was fun. So that's the context of that photo. That's one of my favorites. Weirdly, ironically.
Emnet: I really like this photo. I think it was really good that you guys took the time to take care of yourself. Okay, thank you so much. Those are all the questions we have for you.
